When designing her salon's business card, Kimberly Paige Valor, owner of Modern Concepts Salon in Bayville, NJ, found inspiration in an unusual place: her friends' tattoo parlors. "I wanted something that was fun, bright and eclectic," she says. Valor's card, which aims to mimic the salon's slogan, "On the cutting edge of fashion," features colorful cherries, swallows and roses in a design she thought would appeal to both men and women. Using two fonts, Batik Regular and Old English, added to the card's funkiness, she says. "I've had so many clients come in solely because they loved the logo," she says. "It goes against the grain, but that's what we're all about." —A.F.
